Anthony Albanese to receive ‘global citizen’ award at United Nations

The prestigious international award, which has previously been awarded to world leaders including Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am and Argentina’s controversial libertarian president Javier Milei, will be given to Anthony Albanese when he travels to New York later this year.
It is understood that the Prime Minister will be presented with the Global Citizens Award by the Atlantic Council, an impartial global think tank, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
The annual award recognizes leaders for their contributions to addressing global challenges, with the ceremony recognized as “the premier forum for world leaders, diplomats, chief executives, and the philanthropic, social and entertainment communities,” according to the Atlantic Council.
Last year’s recipients include French President Emmanuel Macron, Argentina’s controversial libertarian president Javier Milei and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Other award recipients include Italian President Giorgia Meloni in 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2023, Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am in 2019, and former Israeli President Shimon Peres and actor Robert De Niro in 2014.

Former US President Bill Clinton was given the Distinguished International Leadership Award in 2010.
ABC, which first reported the award, said the Atlantic Council awarded the Prime Minister the award for his “inspiring leadership in Australia, his commitment to strengthening the AUKUS partnership and Indo-Pacific security cooperation, his security cooperation efforts, and his efforts to expand across Southeast Asia and the Pacific.”
