Svitolina Wins Italian Open, Sinner Reaches Men’s Final

ROME: Elina Svitolina won her third Italian Open title in Rome on Saturday, beating Coco Gauff, who lost her second consecutive final.

In the men’s final on Sunday, host Jannik Sinner will face Casper Ruud.

It took Svitolina nearly three hours to prevail 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2 and claim her first WTA 1000 title since lifting the title in Rome in 2018. The Ukrainian player also won in 2017.

“It’s hard to believe that eight years have passed since I received this trophy here, and of course I was very, very, very satisfied with the two weeks I spent here,” Svitolina said on the field after her 20th career title.

“I told my coach that it would be good to have a tour number before I finish my career. He told me that he hoped we could do it this year. So I’m very, very happy.”

Gauff, who hopes to become the first American to win in Rome since 2016, lost to Jasmine Paolini last year but managed to win the French Open.

“It’s been a great two weeks… and I definitely feel the momentum building at the French Open,” he said. “We learned a lot from this match”

Gauff is off to a great start by breaking Svitolina and holding on for love. She also had a chance to take a 5-2 lead, but Svitolina fended off three break points and opened up by winning four matches in a row.

Third-seeded Gauff struggled to serve throughout the second set but managed to tie the match in the tiebreaker.

However, Svitolina dominated the decision and broke Gauff’s serve twice, allowing her to hold serve for the title. Svitolina, ranked seventh, scored her third match point with a volley into the net.

Sinner finished off Medvedev Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the rain-delayed semi-final on Saturday and is one victory away from becoming the second man after Novak Djokovic to win nine Masters 1000 titles. Djokovic has won every Masters tournament at least twice.

When the match was postponed late Friday, top-seeded Sinner took a 4-2 lead in the third set. The Italian wrapped up the match in 15 minutes on Saturday, reaching his third match point after parrying two serves from Medvedev.

“This was a very different and tough challenge,” Sinner said. “I usually don’t have trouble sleeping at night, but this time it wasn’t easy.

“You’re in the third set, it’s almost over, but you still have to come back and you never know what happens. It’s like the beginning of the match, there are nerves again. I’m very happy with how I handled it and got back to the final.”

Ruud defeated host Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 on the red floor of Foro Italico earlier Friday.

Sinner is also trying to become the first Italian to lift the Roma trophy since Adriano Panatta in 1976. Panatta will present the trophy on Sunday and Italian President Sergio Mattarella will also attend the men’s final.

Sinner looked exhausted After easily winning the first set on Friday, Sinner looked tired as Medvedev stepped up his game and started running him around with shots from the court and groundstrokes into the corners.

After a few points, Sinner bent over exhausted and leaned on his racket for support. Sinner’s right thigh was treated by a trainer midway through the second set.

Sinner came back from 3-0 but was broken again in the 12th game and lost the set to Medvedev.

A bad jump helped Sinner break Medvedev early in the third quarter and take complete control.

Sinner vs. Ruud 4-0 Sinner has won all four of his career encounters with Ruud without losing a set; This included last year’s 6-0 and 6-1 defeats in the Rome quarter-finals.

“Jannik is after history,” Ruud said. “I have to be the one to try to stop him, and it’s not going to be easy to play here in his own country. … He actually sent me onto the same pitch last year, so of course I’m looking for revenge. But I also realize he’s an incredible player and a unique talent.”

Sinner lost last year’s final to Carlos Alcaraz, who was sidelined due to an injury to his right wrist. In 2025, Paolini became the first Italian woman to lift the trophy in 40 years.

Sinner hasn’t lost since February 19 in the Qatar Open quarterfinals. He won 28 matches in a row and set a record of five consecutive Masters titles. He can become the second man after Rafael Nadal in 2010 to win three Masters tournaments on clay in the same season, including Monte Carlo and Madrid.

For Sinner, the only Grand Slam event he has not won after Rome is the French Open. Title holder Alcaraz will also miss this match.
