RAF Red Arrows to tour US to mark 250 years of American independence
The Red Arrows will tour the United States this summer to celebrate 250 years of American independence.
More than two centuries after the US rejected British rule at gunpoint, the team will take part in 13 events across seven states, with Royal Navy ships also joining the celebrations in New Orleans and New York.
It follows King Charles’ anniversary state visit last month, which was seen as a way to ease relations with the United States, the UK’s strongest and closest security ally, which have been strained since Donald Trump re-entered the White House.
The president has repeatedly warned Britain and other European countries to increase defense spending or it could withdraw from NATO, while also opposing Labour’s North Sea policies and attacking Keir Starmer.
Defense Secretary Lord Coaker said the move would show “the defense relationship between our nations is built on unparalleled trust, professionalism and common purpose”.
“British and American forces have served together with distinction for generations, and our alliance is vital to the security of our countries and our allies around the world,” he added.
The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, commonly known as the Red Arrows, also flew flyovers during President Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom last year.
They will now cross the Atlantic for a month for a series of high-profile celebrations, including taking part in a major international flyover over New York in front of a crowd of thousands on Independence Day, July 4.
Air Vice Marshal Mark Jackson, Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group, said: “We are honored to accept the U.S. military’s invitation to the Red Arrows to participate in these special events on July 4th in the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“The Royal Air Force has a long and proud history of working alongside the US Armed Forces, whether on operations and exercises or joining other allies as part of NATO.
“I hope the Red Arrows’ trademark combination of close formation flying, speed and world-class precision will excite and inspire the hundreds of thousands of people who attend these shows.”
Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Band will also travel to the US to perform at the celebrations.
