Woman found dead in New Town home had been there for ‘several weeks’
A woman’s body was found in a house in Hobart’s northern suburb; police believed the woman had been there “for several weeks.”
Emergency services were called to a home in Lissadell Court, New Town, at around 4pm on Saturday after the body of a woman was found lying on the floor in the hallway.
Although he has not yet been officially identified, police believe he is in his 60s.
Tasmania Police Detective Inspector David Gill said they spoke to a man in his 50s who was detained at the residence for a mental health assessment on Saturday morning.
Police did not enter the property at that time.
“Later that day another person visited the address and found the dead woman’s body on the ground,” Inspector Gill told reporters.
“He was lying on the floor in the hallway.”
The house was later declared a crime scene.
The man in his 50s was later arrested and detained.
No charges were filed.
The autopsy will be completed on Monday to determine the woman’s cause of death.
While the investigation into the incident continues, the police consider the woman’s death suspicious.
Inspector Gill said: “At this stage police are treating the woman’s death as suspicious, but we are open-minded to the possibility that her death may have resulted from natural causes.”
He said it was possible the woman had died some time before the discovery.
“An autopsy is planned for tomorrow morning to determine the woman’s cause of death,” he said.
“At this stage it is believed the woman has been deceased at the residence for several weeks.”
