One-year-old Ariella Mann became seriously ill after traveling with her family to the five-star Jaz Makadi Aquaviva in Hurghada, Egypt, in December 2025. After returning to the UK, he was hospitalized and doctors confirmed that he had haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). E coli – this led to his death.
Injury expert solicitor Irwin Mitchell said two other children also became seriously ill and developed HUS after staying at the same hotel between July 2024 and January 2026.
Chloe Crook, who was two at the time of the holiday, and Arthur Broughton, then six, are still under the care of specialist nephrology teams after contracting HUS during their stay at Jaz Makadi Aquaviva, according to Irwin Mitchell.
Lawyers representing the Mann family and the families of Chloe and Arthur are now demanding answers from holiday operators Tui and the hotel.
Ariella’s mother Jade Oakes, 34, said she and Ariella’s father Lee Mann, 37, felt “completely helpless” as they watched their daughter fall ill on their dream £6,000 package holiday.
“We went to Egypt hoping to make happy memories with our little daughter, but it turned out to be the worst time of our lives,” he said. “Ariella was a very happy child and it quickly became obvious that she wasn’t herself, but nothing could have prepared us for what happened.”
While they were away, Ariella began showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. He received treatment several times at the hotel clinic but could not recover.
The family returned to the UK on 5 January 2026. However, Ariella’s condition continued to deteriorate and she was later taken to hospital by ambulance.
On January 7, Ariella was transferred to a specialist children’s hospital, where she was placed in intensive care and fell into a coma. There it was confirmed that Ariella had a contract coli, It caused HUS, which required dialysis and also affected his brain.
His condition continued to deteriorate and he died on January 10.
“We felt completely helpless watching Ariella suffer,” Ms Oakes said. “Later, I was very sad to hear that other children had the same disease. We want to warn other families about the dangers of the disease. coli and HUS.”
She added: “I cannot describe the pain of losing a child. Returning from hospital with unopened Christmas presents after Ariella’s death was unbearable. “Lee has felt unable to return to work since Ariella left us and we do our best to support each other, but most days just getting out of bed is a struggle.
“Ariella was a special, curious and loving little girl and the best daughter and little sister anyone could ask for. We will miss her with all our hearts.
“This was a terrible time for our entire family, and we know we will never be the same again. We deserve answers about what happened to our daughter.”
Chloe Crook, who was two years old when she went on holiday in July 2024, showed symptoms similar to Ariella’s while in Egypt and was later flown to hospital in London for treatment.
He was placed in an induced coma for four days. During this time, Chloe developed pneumonia and was found to have formed blood clots in her neck and arm, for which she also received treatment.
Chloe was later discharged but remains under the care of the hospital’s nephrology team.
Lawyers said Arthur Broughton, who contracted HUS after staying at a hotel in August 2025, had to relearn how to walk properly because the disease affected his brain. His kidney function is currently functioning at around 70 percent and he continues to take medication under the supervision of his specialist nephrology team.
Irwin Mitchell lawyer Jatinder Paul, who is representing the families, said it was a “huge concern” that all three cases took place at the same hotel.
A spokesman for Tui said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ariella and our thoughts are with her and her family at this incredibly difficult time. This is a devastating loss and we recognize the profound impact this tragedy has had on them. We are also very sorry to hear of the serious illness suffered by Arthur and Chloe and the impact this has had on them and their family. We recognize how frightening such experiences can be.
“Reports of illness, particularly involving children, are taken extremely seriously. As soon as we were notified of the illness by Ariella’s family upon their return home, we took immediate action by ordering an independent health and safety investigation. We continue to monitor any reports of illness in line with our routine processes with the hotel, local authorities and the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) and are co-operating fully with all relevant investigations. It would not be appropriate to speculate as to the cause of the incident while these processes are ongoing.
