Undaunted by successive electoral setbacks, Naam Tamilar Katchi chief coordinator Seeman on Monday said the party will contest alone in all 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry General elections in 2029.
He appealed to the party cadre not to be discouraged by the recent Assembly election results in which the party’s vote share fell by 50%.
Speaking at the “18 May Tamil Genocide Day” observance near Chennai, Mr Seeman said voters in Tamil Nadu did not seem to want an “ideology” but preferred an “image”.
“What the Tamil people want is not ideology but image. We studied history, economics, geology, chemistry, sociology, agriculture and literature. But people taught us a different lesson. This is new for us. We will learn this too,” he said.
Mr Seeman said “victory” was now rushing towards the party, adding that people would “look for candles at night when there is no electricity”.
“When there is injustice, they will look for good people. One day, people will look for us. When we spoke, they looked at us as entertainment, but they accepted the person who entertained them as a leader,” he joked, adding: “What can we do?! They don’t need an idea, they just need charm. They didn’t know who the candidate was, whether he was working or not… They voted (for TVK) without knowing why they voted. They didn’t want to know Karl Marx, Buddha, Ingersol, Ambedkar, Phule, Bhagat.” Singh… yet we will continue to endure and resist.”
Mr Seeman appears to believe that the change in State Government will not result in fundamental changes in administration. “The person has changed, but will the management change? Nothing will change. Did you want to become the Prime Minister without knowing that you owe ₹10 million crore? I said such promises cannot be fulfilled. Let’s see how you will give ₹2,500 per month (for heads of family) and six cylinders free (annually for households). I said it cannot be given for free. I am proud of it.”
Criticizing parents and grandparents for giving in to the whims and fancies of children in their homes, Mr Seeman said: “People say they vote because their grandchild/grandchild asks them to vote. If they ask for a quarter (bottle of liquor) will you accept it? Democracy has become nonsense.”
Mr. Seeman also had harsh words about the Congress party moving away from the DMK alliance and joining the TVK immediately after the alliance.
“Now you (DMK) have realized how cheap the Congress can be. You watched it kill Tamils to retain power… now it has insulted you. Rahul Gandhi did not even come on stage with you (MK Stalin) but attended the swearing-in ceremony (of CM C. Joseph Vijay) with his teeth showing. After the elections, the evil force became ‘pure power’. DMK is an evil force but those (MLAs) elected with DMK votes were welcomed. (by TVK).”
He added: “People will be talking about 13.This amendment (in Sri Lanka) etc., but the only solution is a separate Eelam. We demand a referendum. When we come to power (in Tamil Nadu), we will push for a referendum on a separate state for Tamils in Sri Lanka. “This is the last political solution,” he said.
