Last week, the former monarch was hospitalized after experiencing chest pains, and on Friday he underwent coronary angioplasty (balloon widening of the coronary artery) surgery. The surgery is minimally invasive and is used to restore normal blood flow by opening blocked or narrowed blood vessels.

The palace said in a statement Friday that he was “tired but in good spirits.”

The former monarch ruled Denmark for 52 years before handing the throne to his eldest son Frederik in January 2024.

He cited his health as one of the reasons for his abdication, as he underwent extensive back surgery in February 2023.

“The operation inevitably led to reflections on the future, on whether it was an appropriate time to pass on responsibility to the next generation,” he said in his New Year’s Eve message. “I decided now was the right time.”
