Train delays across UK after National Rail confirms nationwide issue

A signaling issue affecting the rail network has caused train delays across the UK this afternoon.

National Rail warned just after 1pm on Tuesday that problems with communications systems in several areas meant train services could be delayed.

It was added in a later update that the outage was expected until at least 6 pm.

Passengers on the Elizabeth line, London Overground and Great Western Railway, among others across the country, may also be affected.

In its initial statement, National Rail said: “Various signaling centers are reporting problems with the radio system that allows drivers to connect to the signal transmitter. Network Rail staff are investigating.

“Trains may continue to operate but may have to operate at a reduced speed, resulting in longer journey times.”

Just before 2pm, National Rail said the problems had been resolved and services would return to normal. However, disruptions are expected to continue until 18.00 in the evening.

It was stated that Elizabeth Line services returned to normal at around 15.45, but continued with delays.

National Rail added: “Various signaling centers reported problems with the radio system that allows drivers to connect to the signalman earlier today. This was resolved immediately, but trains may still experience delays or alterations while normal service continues.”

According to National Rail, affected train operators include: Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Elizabeth line, Great Western Railway, Hull Trains, LNER, London Northwestern Railway, London Overground, Lumo, Northern, South Western Railway, TransPennine Express, West Midlands Railway.

Avanti said that if your train is canceled, your ticket will be valid on one of the two services immediately before or immediately after the train you booked.

Great Western said ticket acceptance was available with CrossCountry on select routes and with Transport for Wales between Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester, Severn Tunnel Junction, Newport and Carmarthen via Cardiff Central and Swansea.
