Reddy Pharma loses ‘name’ in Delhi HC ruling

New Delhi: Upholding the Intellectual Property Appellate Board’s order directing the Trademark Registry to delete ‘Reddy’ from the name Reddy Pharmaceuticals, the Delhi High Court also banned the Hyderabad-based firm from manufacturing, selling or using the name ‘Reddy’ for its products and banned ‘Dr. Reddy’s is a trademark of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL). A division bench said that the adoption and use of the trademark ‘Reddy’ by Reddy Pharmaceuticals was tainted from the beginning and could not be saved by subsequent use or by claiming that it was a common surname.
