Southern Quebec | A taste of summer before cooler temperatures return

Southern Quebec was treated to a taste of summer on Tuesday. But don’t get too used to it: the heat will give way to cooler temperatures from Wednesday.

In Montreal, the mercury reached 34 degrees Tuesday afternoon with the humidex factor, climbing above seasonal norms without breaking a record.

“The record for May 19 was 33.9 degrees in 1962. There have also been several other years in the past where we had 29, 30, 31 degrees,” explains Peter Kimbell, meteorologist at Environment Canada.

The high humidex is explained by a warm air mass currently covering southern Quebec and Ontario, which will remain until Wednesday afternoon.

Temperatures of at least 20 degrees are even expected overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in Montreal. “It is still much above normal, which is a minimum of 9 degrees,” underlines Mr. Kimbell.

A severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect Tuesday evening in certain areas of the Outaouais, including Gatineau. The Montreal region should however be spared, despite a possibility of showers in the morning on Wednesday.

The air will then cool to a maximum of 6 degrees Thursday morning, then temperatures remaining slightly below seasonal norms.
