Opposition Congress and NCP (SP) on Wednesday (May 20, 2026) attacked the Maharashtra government over reports of fuel shortage in some parts of the state, asking whether “even the oil in the twin-engine government’s engines has run out”.

Congress Legislative Assembly Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar and NCP (SP) MLA Jayant Patil cited incidents in Nagpur where a police vehicle sent to search for a missing girl was apparently non-diesel and a petrol pump employee was attacked in Jalgaon over alleged fuel shortage.

Mr Wadettiwar claimed people in the state were facing lack of security and fuel shortages and that taxpayer-funded billboards continued to shine ahead of the elections.

Amid the ongoing West Asian crisis, the central government has maintained that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG.

Former Minister of State Patil, in his post on There were fights over gasoline and diesel in Washim Naka. The former State NCP (SP) chief alleged that the police in Nagpur did not have diesel (for their vehicles) to search for a missing girl.

“What exactly is going on? Have the twin-engine government even run out of oil in their engines?” Mr. Patil asked.

The ruling alliance often uses the term ‘double-engine government’ to describe its party being in power at both the Center and the State simultaneously.

Referring to the events mentioned by Mr. Patil, Mr. Wadettiwar claimed that Maharashtra is facing a complete administrative collapse due to the ongoing fuel shortage and the “tri-engine government” led by the BJP (referring to its rule in the Centre, state and local bodies) has come to a halt.

In a post on

“The worst part was that even the police vehicle sent to search for a missing girl in Nagpur had no diesel,” he said.

Mr. Wadettiwar said this exposed what he described as the hollowness of the BJP’s claims of building a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).

“They have been boasting about the dual-engine government for years, but today not a single engine is working,” he joked.

“While the common people are fighting for every drop of oil and their right to life, the rulers in Delhi are busy paying fake praise to ‘Amrit Kaal’.” he accused.

Today, Maharashtra has no government; What remains is just an advertising market,” said Mr. Wadettiwar, accusing those in power of ignoring public anger and distress.
