Man charged with stealing camera equipment from terror attack victim Peter Meagher
A man has been charged with allegedly stealing camera equipment from Peter Meagher, who was shot at Bondi Beach following the terror attack, and pawning it days later.
Meagher, 61, a retired police officer and photographer, was among 15 people killed in the Dec. 14 shooting.
Detectives found that one of the victims, Meagher, had “camera equipment stolen following the attack.”
Police raided a home in Marayong, in Sydney’s west, on Wednesday morning and arrested a 35-year-old man, an alleged photographer at the Chanukah by the Sea event where the attack occurred.
“Police will allege the man was a photographer who stole the camera equipment of the deceased 61-year-old at the Hannukah event before pawning it days later,” police said in a statement Thursday morning.
Police seized a camera, handcuffs and electronic devices from the property. Officers also allegedly found white crystal powder and other electronic parts in a car.
The 35-year-old man was taken to Riverstone police station where he was charged with theft between $2000 and $5000, handling stolen property, giving false information to a licencee, possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit and possessing and supplying drugs.
He was released on conditional bail and will appear at Blacktown Local Court on June 22.
