Imagine it was a few decades after Botticelli painted. Birth of VenusHe decided to cut his hair. Edward Albee did something much more radical, although it was no such masterpiece. First play, 1959s Zoo StoryIt was a one-act piece set in New York’s Central Park. Two strangers meet; Jerry does most of the talking and Peter listens. Over time, Albee became dissatisfied with Peter’s passivity and added a prequel in 2004 and At Home at the Zoo was born.
The new law determines Peter’s life. His wife, Ann, gets a little fed up with her textbook-publishing husband offering loving, safe, predictable sex, while he’s flanked by their two daughters, two cats and two lovebirds, and argues with her in old Albee fashion.
When she says she wants Peter to be more like an animal, Peter recounts his youthful adventure in which he harmed a girl. This snaps Ann out of her sherry-drinking haze and sends Peter to the park, where he encounters the wild Jerry.
