Gurindervir, Vishal Break National 100m, 400m Records; Tejaswin Tops 8000 Mark in Decathlon

Ranchi: Gurindervir Singh produced a sensational race to reduce the men’s 100 meters national record to 10.09 seconds; Vishal TK became the first Indian to run 400 meters in under 45 seconds and decathlete Tejaswin Shankar became the first person from the country to score 8000 points on the historic second day of the National Senior Federation Competition here on Saturday.

While Gurindervir achieved the second fastest time in Asia this season, Vishal performed even better and his performance of 44.98 seconds is the best in the continent so far this year.

In another astounding feat, Asian Games silver medalist Tejaswin became the first Indian to cross the 8000 points mark in Decathlon and broke her own national record. His points now place him seventh on the all-Asian time list.

Representing Reliance Foundation, 27-year-old Tejaswin amassed 8057 points in the grueling 10-race discipline to improve on his national record of 7947 set last year. Thowfeeq N from NCOE Trivandrum was a distant second with 7530 points.

Tejaswin, who has held the national record of 2.29 meters in the men’s high jump since 2018, also exceeded the score of 7787 points in the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games qualifiers.

The 100 meters clash between Gurindervir and previous national record holder Animesh Kujur in this encounter will be remembered for centuries in Indian athletics. The same will be true of the achievements of Vishal, whose time of 44.98 seconds is the best in Asia so far this season.

The day saw three national records broken, two of them within a 30-minute span.

Representing Tamil Nadu, 22-year-old Vishal became one of the most talked about Indian athletes after breaking the men’s 400 meters national record with an effort of 45.12 seconds in Chennai last year.

He cemented his status with a spectacular run of 44.98 seconds on Saturday, becoming the first Indian to reach sub-45 seconds.

In the process, he surpassed the 2026 Commonwealth Games qualifying time of 44.96 seconds set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). He also topped Asia’s best list with a time of 44.98 seconds and got ahead of Ammar Ismail Ibrahim with a time of 45.16 seconds in April.

“Athletics fans will definitely follow me when I compete at the global level,” Vishal said after conquering new territories on Saturday.

He said he was visualizing the race as he prepared to break the 45-second mark.

“I was confident of breaking 45 seconds today,” the Tamil Nadu athlete said.

Another athlete from Tamil Nadu, Rajesh Ramesh, came second with 45.31 seconds, while Jay Kumar from Uttar Pradesh came third with 45.47 seconds.

Representing Odisha in the men’s 100 meters, Animesh became the favorite of the match with the national record of 10.18 seconds he broke last year. But on Friday’s opening day, 25-year-old Gurindervir lowered the time to 10.17 seconds in the first semi-final round.

But just five minutes later, 22-year-old Animesh regained his national record in dramatic conditions by running 10.15 seconds in the second semi-final round. The men’s 100 meters national record was broken twice in a matter of minutes on Friday.

On Saturday, Punjabi athlete Gurindervir, representing Reliance Foundation here, had the last laugh in the final race as she became the first Indian sprinter to run under 10.10 seconds.

In the process, he ran 0.11 seconds faster than Animesh and crossed the finish line at least a few meters ahead of his young rival.

After crossing the finish line, Gurindervir showed a white piece of paper with the words ‘The mission is not over yet’. Wait, I’m still standing with 10.10 written on it.

“This record is to prove that my work is not done and I still have strength in my legs,” Gurvindervir said in the post-race interaction.

His coach, James Hillier, said he expects his ward to further improve NR in the coming months.

“He is learning to implement plans in races and his performance chart is improving,” Hillier said.

Pranav Gurav from Reliance Foundation came third with a time of 10.29 seconds.

Gurindervir violated the 2026 Commonwealth Games qualifying time of 10.16 seconds set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

His time of 10.09 seconds was the second-fastest time by an Asian so far this season, trailing 19-year-old Japanese sprinter Fukuto Komuro’s 10.08 seconds in May.
