French Open 2026 results: Marta Kostyuk dedicates win to Ukraine after Russian strikes on her homeland

Selekhmeteva, who changed her team earlier this week, was playing her first match under the Spanish flag.

Kostyuk did not shake hands with his opponent, as Ukrainian players have long had a policy of not shaking hands with Russian or Belarusian players.

The 23-year-old has been an outspoken critic of Russia and its ally Belarus since they began invading Ukraine in 2022.

“My biggest example is the Ukrainian people,” Kostyuk said.

“I woke up this morning and looked at all these people who woke up and continued to live their lives, continue to help people in need.

“I knew that many Ukrainians would come and support today. My friends from Ukraine came to support and I am very happy that they are here.

“I’m incredibly proud of myself. I think it was one of the toughest matches of my career.”

Only Mirra Andreeva (15) has more wins on clay on the WTA Tour this season than the in-form Kostyuk (12), who remains unbeaten on clay in 2026.

She will face Katie Volynets in the next match after the American defeated French Clara Burel with a score of 6-3 6-1.
