NACC chief Paul Brereton finally gets the message and resigns

National Anti-Corruption Commissioner Paul Brereton has tendered his resignation to the Governor-General after three years of not much going on.

His resignation followed a tenure marred by controversy, including his failure to recuse himself when he should have been dismissed, taking another paid job without explanation, and generally leading a commission that fell well short of reasonable expectations.

Three years and an annual budget of $67 million and 220 staff, the highlight of the latest NACC report (2024-25) says it all:

  • 90 percent of referrals are rejected through ‘triage’
  • 7 Investigation reports
  • 34 ongoing investigations

In the press release announcing his resignation, Brereton said: “The continued focus on issues that concern me personally, rather than on the work of the Commission, distracts from the Commission’s core purpose.”
