‘Peak woke’ moments go viral as users share Sanders, ‘choose your fighter’ clips

A social media post asking for “waking up from the top” moments over the years prompted people to ask about Sen. It quickly went viral after Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., posted old clips of his interruption of a 2015 Black Lives Matter rally, a transgender swimmer winning the women’s NCAA title, and a “pick your fighter” video featuring “Squad” member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez joined TikTok’s “pick your fighter” video trend last year along with other Democrats, including Reps. Jasmine Crockett, Lauren Underwood, Katherine Clark, Judy Chu and Susie Lee.
The video went viral and became the subject of ridicule on both sides of the aisle in March 2025.
Outkick’s Clay Travis flagged transgender swimmer Lia Thomas winning the 2022 NCAA swimming title, and so did two ESPN anchors who held a moment of silence to protest the Florida bill, dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Yahoo! Sport In that case.

Many also noted videos related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including one of former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot dressed in a “Rona Destroyer” costume in 2020.
Another social media user posted a clip of former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announcing at a one-day press conference in May 2021 that people could get free Shake Shack fries if they were vaccinated. The promotion also included a coupon for a Shake Shack burger.
“I want you to look at this and think about this; again, some people like burgers, some people don’t. We really want to respect all forms of life – but if that appeals to you, think about that when you’re considering the vaccine,” he says in the video.
After taking a bite of a burger on camera, de Blasio says: “Vaccine. Hmm. I’m feeling really good about the vaccine right now.”
Townhall’s Siraj Hashmi wrote in response: “Billy Porter singing ‘For What It’s Worth’ at the 2020 Dem Convention, when everything was virtual because of COVID and the ashes of the George Floyd riots still smoldered, is PEAK WOKE.”
Hashmi also pointed out the Covid-related video of celebrities singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” in March 2020.

One user pointed out a clip of Bernie Sanders being interrupted at an event in 2016 Campaign event organized by Black Lives Matter protesters.
As two women went to the podium where Sanders was speaking and demanded the microphone, one of them shouted, “We are angry.” to NBC News.
After being booed by the crowd, one of the women said, “I was going to tell Bernie how racist this city is, but you’ve already done that for me.”
