Holiday-makers in limbo as Aussie travel firm AVG Travels collapses into liquidation
An Australian holiday company that boasted that its customers could “travel more and spend less” has entered liquidation.
Melbourne-based AVG Travels, which offers discounted international travel to thousands of Australians, appointed liquidators this week, leaving customers scrambling to adjust their plans.
The announcement comes after days of uncertainty for customers who reported their tours were canceled or placed under review just days before their scheduled departure.
The company appointed insolvency firm McGrathNicol as liquidator. It will take control of AVG Travels’ operations and evaluate what can be salvaged for customers and creditors.
The company’s website is live and continues to show ads offering big savings on holidays to Japan, Sri Lanka and China, among other trips.
However, visitors initially encounter a short notification in a pop-up window explaining the situation.
It says: “Matthew Hutton and Mark Holland of McGrathNicol were appointed liquidators of AVG Travels Pty Ltd (In Liquidation) on 26 May 2026.
“Please direct your questions to McGrathNicol at AVGTRAVELS@mcgrathnicol.com.”
The same notice was printed and posted on the door of the firm’s headquarters in Melbourne.
McGrathNicol said in a statement that it had “assumed control of the business of AVG Travels”, adding that it was “undertaking an urgent review of AVG’s financial condition and business operations to determine the best course of action to preserve value for stakeholders.”
The company added that customers with existing reservations will be contacted.
