Veteran Texas congressman Al Green beaten in Democratic primary runoff | Texas

Freshman Democratic U.S. representative Christian Menefee defeated veteran congressman Al Green on Tuesday in a bitter runoff that was the product of Republican gerrymandering.

Last year, the Republican-dominated Texas legislature unveiled a congressional map designed to flip seats in favor of the GOP. Donald Trump had called on state lawmakers to preserve the party’s congressional majority.

Under the new map, Green, a convention fixture for more than two decades and a staunch critic of Trump, effectively won the reliably Democratic ninth district. eliminated. He announced his bid for the 18th district in November.

Menefee was sworn into the seat in January after winning a special election to replace the late U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner.

On the campaign trail, Green tried to associate Menefee with big money policies and accused her opponent of being aligned with “Trump’s crypto cronies,” Houston Public Media reported.

Green’s protests against the Trump administration have garnered national attention in recent years.

In the president’s State of the Union address in February, he declared, “Black people are not monkeys!” He was expelled after carrying a banner that read: This was a reaction to Trump sharing a racist AI-generated video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys.
