More than one million young people not in work, education or training, new figures show as Neet crisis laid bare

New figures show more than a million young people are neither in work, education nor training (Neet), revealing the extent of the crisis.

In new data published on Thursday, the Office for National Statistics said the number of Neets rose to a post-pandemic high of 1.01 million in the three months from January to March.

The number of young people not in employment, education or training (Neets) rose to a post-pandemic high of 1.01 million in the three months from January to March, new official figures showed.

This means an increase of 89,000 compared to the previous year and an increase of 55,000 compared to the previous economic quarter.

ONS head of labor market output Elise Rohan said the rise was “due to more young people no longer looking for work”.

Former Labor health minister Alan Milburn, who is leading a government review of the issue, warned that Britain “risks a lost generation” if ministers do not urgently tackle youth unemployment.
