Tamil Nadu’s education policy is sufficient, no need for NEP: TN Education Minister Thiru A. Rajmohan

Speaking to reporters after launching the admission campaign for the 2026-27 academic year at Dhanakodi Secondary School in Chennai’s Chintadripet, Rajmohan said the state’s long-standing two-language policy will continue without any changes.
“The State Education Policy is good for Tamil Nadu. The two-language policy will always remain in Tamil Nadu. There is no doubt about it,” the Minister said.

On NEET, Rajmohan said the government has taken a consistent stand against the review and will continue its legal efforts on the issue.
“We have the same stance before coming to the government. We are against NEET. Legal proceedings are ongoing and we will continue to pursue it legally,” he said.
The Minister, along with School Education Department Secretary Chandramohan and other officials, launched the state-wide admission drive and welcomed the children by distributing uniforms, textbooks, chocolates and other learning materials.Also Read: Congress MP S Jothimani alleges major irregularities in selection of candidates for Tamil Nadu Assembly elections
Addressing the media, Rajmohan said that the department has set a target of enrolling four lakh students during the current academic year.
“We launched the admission campaign today. We welcomed the children by giving them books, uniforms and chocolates and also greeted them with flower garlands. We have set a target of enrolling four lakh students. There is not much difference between admissions in private and government schools across Tamil Nadu. The admission numbers are almost equal,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted the steps taken to improve school infrastructure, especially cleaning facilities.
“We have signed measures to provide toilet facilities in all schools. Like toilets, every facility in schools should also be properly maintained and we are working with this intention,” Rajmohan said. he said.
He said the government had determined that schools were working with only one teacher and had directed authorities to immediately take corrective action where necessary.
Rajmohan also emphasized the importance of child safety in schools and noted that helpline numbers were included in textbooks and teachers were trained to respond to complaints regarding sexual harassment and other issues.
“All four departments, along with the Department of School Education, will stand by the affected people,” he said.
Referring to NEP again, Rajmohan said Tamil Nadu’s own education policy designed around the needs and welfare of the state is sufficient and there is no need to adopt the National Education Policy. He added that the government will continue to implement education plans without politicizing them and ensure that the benefits reach students effectively.
