Liverpool sack head coach Arne Slot and approach Andoni Iraola

Liverpool have insisted a change of manager is not on the agenda, but after assessing the situation following the end of the season last weekend, the club’s hierarchy believe the next stage requires a more front-footed, aggressive and urgent style of football.
The decision to sack Slot was made by FSG’s chief executive Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes.
Iraola, 43, is one of the highest-rated coaches in Europe and is known for his attacking style of play.
Hughes was appointed to Bournemouth while he was manager at the Cherries and leaves that position to join the Reds in 2024.
Bournemouth finished just one place and three points behind Liverpool in qualifying for next season’s Europa League.
Slot took over as Liverpool’s coach in 2024, replacing Jürgen Klopp. The German player resigned at Anfield after nine years as manager.
Earlier this month, striker Mohamed Salah said the club needed to return to being the “heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear” after defeat at Aston Villa.
Much of Liverpool’s success under Klopp (where they have won every major trophy) has come from this style of play.
“Our conclusion is built on the belief that the direction of the team is best addressed through a change of direction. This does not diminish the work Arne has done here or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his abilities. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach,” the statement said.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, the Premier League title and the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcome at Anfield.”
