A teenager has died after diving into Lake Balderton in Nottinghamshire. Emergency services were called to the lake at New Balderton, near Newark, at around 2.30pm on Thursday, May 28, following reports that a young man had gone into the water.

Police, firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene and a 19-year-old teenager, who was there with his friends, was pulled from the lake. It was stated that the person, who was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital, later died. Nottinghamshire Live.

Police said the family has been notified and officers are supporting them through this distressing time. A file will be prepared for the coroner, who considers that there is no suspicious situation.

Newark Chief Inspector Clive Collings said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are solely with this young man’s family.

“We recognize this will be very distressing for the local community and we encourage people to access support if they need it.

“We know that in hot weather people want to stay cool, but open water is extremely dangerous as there is no way to tell what’s beneath the surface.”

Group manager Charlotte Weatherall-Smith, of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I would like to extend our deepest condolences and deepest condolences to this young man’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

“This is a tragic incident and we sympathize with everyone affected.

“Incidents like this are a stark reminder of the dangers open water can pose.

“Even on warm, sunny days, water temperatures can be much colder than they appear, and entering the water can lead to cold water shock, which can be sudden, severe and potentially fatal.

“If you see someone in distress in the water, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire brigade.

“Encourage the person to swim on their back to help them stay calm and save energy. For your own safety, please do not enter the water or attempt to rescue yourself as this could put other lives at risk.”
