French Open 2026 results: Iga Swiatek, four-time champion, loses to Marta Kostyuk in fourth round

There was little separating the pair in the first set, as they traded two breaks before Kostyuk eventually took control.

The brilliance of Swiatek’s stroke play was on display as she came back against Kostyuk, but unforced errors denied her serve as two double faults gave the Ukrainian the advantage before winning the opening set with a fine backhand winner.

Kostyuk had not made a move against Swiatek in their previous three encounters at tour level, and as the 23-year-old’s grip on the match tightened, so did his confidence.

Powerful groundstrokes continued to wear down Swiatek, who escaped in the second set to reach the last eight for the first time at Roland Garros, while Swiatek failed to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open for the first time since her debut in 2019.

Swiatek’s defeat comes at a time when big names are emerging from the men’s and women’s draws at Roland Garros.

Men’s world number one Jannik Sinner, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and recent women’s champion Coco Gauff have withdrawn from the tournament in recent days.

Meanwhile, Romanian 18th seed Sorana Cirstea reached her second quarter-final at the French Open, 17 years after making her debut in the last eight at Roland Garros.

The 36-year-old player, who plans to retire at the end of the year, defeated Wang Xiyu 6-3 7-6 (7-4) in the Chinese qualifiers.
