Woman dead and man in critical condition after trying to rescue their dog from sea

A woman died while trying to save her dog from the sea, and a man is in critical condition.

Police were called to Fleetwood Beach in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire, at 8.30pm on Saturday following reports that two people were having trouble in the water.

Emergency services treated two people, both in their sixties, who were pulled from the water by HM Coastguard.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “We now understand that a man and a woman were left in distress after entering the water to rescue their stranded dog.”

Lancashire Police said the woman was pronounced dead in hospital and the man was in a critical condition, adding that the dog was rescued safe and well.

The police started an investigation to identify the woman’s relatives.

The spokesman added: “They were treated at the scene but unfortunately the woman, in her sixties, was pronounced dead in hospital. Inquiries are ongoing to identify her next of kin.”

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and the file will be forwarded to the coroner in due course.”

At least 13 people, including children, died in water-related incidents during the record-breaking heat wave.

In response to the deaths, the Royal Life-Saving Society urged people to “stop and think” before entering the water.

“Hotter weather is unfortunately associated with increased accidental drownings,” he said, and despite the warmer weather, “water temperatures remain very cold.”

An urgent search continues for an 11-year-old boy who went missing after entering a river in South Yorkshire on Saturday.

Police were called to Ferry Boat Lane, Mexborough, at 7.59pm after the boy was seen entering the River Don but did not come out.
