The Bengaluru Traffic Police has booked 699 drivers for drunk driving after checking more than 41,000 vehicles across Bengaluru as part of a week-long special campaign against drunk driving. The enforcement campaign from May 25 to May 31 also targeted excessive speed, bringing the total number of cases recorded during the trip to 1,086.

The operation was carried out by personnel from all 53 traffic police stations in Bengaluru as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by careless driving.

During the drink-driving prevention campaign, police checked 41,033 vehicles and recorded 699 cases against violators. A total fine of Rs 2.33 lakh was collected.

In the simultaneous crackdown on speeding, the police registered 387 cases and imposed a fine of ₹ 1.56 lakh.

The traffic police said the special enforcement drive is aimed at curbing the dual threats of drunk driving and overspeeding, both of which are among the leading causes of road accidents in the city.

“Similar drives will continue in the coming weeks to ensure stricter compliance with traffic rules and improve commuter safety,” a senior official said.
