A toll booth attendant on the Florida coast was killed Monday when the driver of a pickup truck crashed into the structure before becoming stuck in the sand.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said the fatal crash occurred at the Dunlawton Boulevard beach access ramp in Daytona Beach Shores around 12:40 p.m. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said at the scene that the employee inside, Tammy Jo Baker, was just a few weeks away from her 63rd birthday.
The sheriff said the driver was “probably going about 40 miles per hour.” “And it crushes the toll booth attendant.”

Baker, a longtime Volusia County employee who had recently started working for a beach parking contractor, was pronounced dead at the scene after lifeguards attempted CPR.
“I think he was probably close to death on impact,” Chitwood said. “When you look at it, that cabin is made of nothing. And you hit that thing at 40 miles per hour; there’s literally nowhere to go. And with the force of that, it flipped the cabin upside down.”

After the vehicle struck Baker, the driver, identified as 35-year-old Deanna Harrell, continued toward the water, but authorities said she became stuck in the sand before trying to turn around.
Bystanders rushed to the truck to save Harrell, authorities said. Stating that a possible impairment test was performed while driving, Chitwood added that there was a “strong smell of alcohol” coming from the vehicle.
