Second boy, 5, dies after multiple-vehicle collision in Cornwall

A five-year-old child died in hospital after a car accident in Cornwall that also killed an eight-year-old child.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the little boy died at Bristol Children’s Hospital on Tuesday morning.

The eight-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash on the A30 near Connor Downs, Hayle, on May 29.

A woman in her 70s remained in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with serious injuries.

Another woman in her 40s received treatment at Derriford before being discharged. Police said two women and the child were in the same car.

A local man in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The slightly injured person was treated.

He was released under investigation while the investigation continues.

Detective Inspector Andy Heath, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “I am saddened to confirm that a second child has died following a collision on the A30 on Friday.

“It is important that the family is given the privacy needed at this difficult time and that my thoughts remain with them and others affected by this tragic event.

“Investigators continue to support the relatives as we obtain the necessary evidence in this case.

“I would like to thank those who responded to our calls for witnesses this week and would urge any witnesses who have not yet contacted us, or anyone with relevant dashcam footage, to call 101.”
