Gallup poll shows Americans’ support for LGBTQ+ issues sliding backward

A new Gallup poll finds that Americans’ support for LGBTQ+ issues has plateaued and is shifting backwards, with fewer Americans supporting same-sex marriage or viewing same-sex relationships as morally acceptable.

Meanwhile, moral acceptance of gay and lesbian relationships has fallen to 62%, which Gallup says is the lowest point since 2016.

Acceptance of gender transition has fallen even more sharply over the past five years. Today, only 38% of Americans think gender reassignment is morally acceptable; This rate has decreased by eight points since 2021. A majority of 57% find this morally wrong.

Gallup says the cultural shift has been largely driven by Republicans and, to a lesser extent, independents, while Democrats’ views on LGBTQ issues have remained stable.

Partisan change is evident in attitudes toward same-sex marriage. Support for legal same-sex marriage among Republicans has fallen to 37% from a 55% majority recorded in 2021-2022.

Independents also dropped six points to 67 percent, while Democrats have held steady at 87 percent since 2022.

A similar pattern emerged in views regarding the morality of same-sex relationships. The approval rate among Republicans fell 21 points to 35%, levels not seen since 2005-2014. The independent vote dropped eight points to 64%, while the Democratic vote was no significant change at 81%.

Another stark contrast can be seen regarding gender transition. Gallup noted that Republican support for this issue has decreased steadily since 2021, but the attitudes of independents and Democrats remained stable until a sudden drop in support this year.

While Americans have become more supportive of same-sex marriage over the past 20 years, support has decreased slightly each year since 2024.

Similarly, moral approval of gay and lesbian relationships rose from 40% in 2001 to 71% in 2022, before falling sharply to 64% in 2023 and has plateaued since then.

Gallup has framed the decline in support for LGBTQ issues in recent years as a result of conservative pushback against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (DEI) that aim to promote acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals and other historically marginalized groups.
