‘Extraordinary’: Tributes flow for respected aviation journalist Geoffrey Thomas after death at age 74

A memorial ceremony was held following the death of Geoffrey Thomas, one of the world’s most respected aviation journalists, at the age of 74.

Mr Thomas died surrounded by loved ones in Perth on Tuesday after a short illness.

The award-winning journalist was one of the world’s most respected voices in aviation after a five-decade career and fearless reporting on the industry.

The editor-in-chief of AirlineRatings.com and 42kft.com, winner of 47 international awards, has brought his expertise to media in Australia and around the world and has written several books.

A Perth Observatory spokesman said Mr Thomas was one of the best-known voices in aviation journalism, covering everything from airline announcements to new aircraft, safety issues to breaking global news.

“Geoffrey was often the first person journalists, broadcasters, industry leaders and aviation enthusiasts turned to for expert advice,” a spokesperson said in a post.

“He gained a reputation for explaining complex aviation topics in a way anyone could understand.

“His knowledge of the industry was outstanding, but what really set him apart was his passion for aviation. Geoffrey could talk with equal enthusiasm about the latest aircraft technology, airline history or the future of flying.”

Luxury Escapes Global PR and Communications managing director Amanda Bolger paid tribute to Mr Thomas on social media, saying he was an icon to many in the aviation industry.

“A true gentleman, generous with sharing his wisdom, a charming, fun global travel companion, always up for a laugh and adventure, often involving airplanes, sometimes celebrities, but he was always more interested in airplanes,” she said.

“I’ll never forget his kindness when I showed up at National Aviation Press Club events completely terrified and in over my head, and he always made sure there was someone I could sit with. But that was GT, he was always kind.”

A funeral will be held at Karrakatta Cemetery in Perth on June 17.
