California Democratic Congresswoman Judy Chu engaged in a fierce back-and-forth with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday over the Iran war — but was caught flat-footed when asked who the president was during World War I. At a House Ways and Means Committee hearing to discuss the Trump administration’s financial policies, Chu sought to criticize Bessent over a past statement by the Republican president, suggesting that he failed to take into account the financial situations of U.S. citizens during negotiations to end the war. “Do you agree with President Trump that you also don’t care about Americans’ financial well-being?” Chu asked as a staff member held a sign claiming price increases during the U.S. war with Iran.
