PM Modi good friend, India and U.S. will get to trade deal: Trump

US President Donald Trump stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a good friend and expressed his confidence that the US and India will reach a trade agreement.

“We’re going to make a deal because I like your prime minister very much. He’s a good friend of mine. We get along very well and we’re going to make a deal,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

Responding to a question on the trade deal being negotiated between the two countries, Mr. Trump said India had benefited from US policies for years and imposed “massive tariffs”.

“They charged our companies huge amounts of tariffs and we charged them nothing,” Mr. Trump said.

A US delegation was in India earlier this week and concluded four days of negotiations on an interim bilateral agreement on Thursday (June 4).

The trade talks were marked in the spirit of cooperation and pragmatism, with both sides reiterating their determination to reach a mutually beneficial agreement that will strengthen bilateral trade and economic ties, India’s Ministry of Commerce said.
