Bidhannagar Corporation Mayor resigns a day after Kolkata Corporation Mayor quit

The Corporation Mayor of Bidhannagar Municipality submitted his resignation on Thursday, June 4, 2026, just a day after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor resigned from his post. However, KMC officials are yet to accept Firhad Hakim’s resignation from the KMC mayoralty.

BMC Mayor and senior Trinamool Congress leader Krishna Chakraborty resigned from his post; He cited personal reasons for the move.

“I have resigned from the mayor’s office. I will continue working as a councillor. I want to take some time for myself… I have been in this chair for the last 16 years,” Ms. Chakraborty told media persons. He added that he had been working for the people since his childhood and that he would continue to work after resigning from the mayor’s office.

Sharadwat Mukherjee, Bharatiya Janta Party MLA from Bidhannagar, accused Ms. Chakraborty of sitting on the money bed in recent years. “We have listed more than 18-19 properties linked to it and guest houses attached to it. People should be embarrassed if they come to know about this. So now it is going behind the scenes,” Mr. Chakraborty said.

This comes as a major development as many senior stakeholders in the Trinamool Congress have switched sides, quit the party, faced violence and arrests and two others face expulsion.

Mr. Hakim tendered his resignation on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, after serving as mayor of KMC for almost seven years. Senior TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh said Mr. Hakim wanted an honorable exit as KMC was dissolved by the current State government.

On Thursday, June 4, 2026, KMC president and senior TMC leader Mala Ray said that they will hold a house meeting in KMC on June 19. The previous assembly meeting on May 22 had to be canceled after the deadlock between the KMC secretary and TMC councilors threw the situation into turmoil.

However, his move was criticized by the West Bengal government as Mr Hakim expected his resignation to be accepted. Senior Bharatiya Janta Party leader and Minister Agnimitra Paul called the move irresponsible and charged that it showed a lack of accountability on the part of the civic body leader towards the people he was supposed to serve.

Criticizing Mr. Hakim’s resignation on her social media account, Ms. Paul wrote: “Kolkata is at a critical juncture today. With the onset of monsoon season, the city faces recurring challenges related to waterlogging, drainage management, public health issues, road maintenance and emergency preparedness. At such a moment, citizens expect their elected representatives to stand by them, address their concerns and ensure smooth functioning of civic services.”

It is to be noted that several councilors from both Bidhannagar and Kolkata Corporation have fallen into the police net on charges of intimidation, extortion, threats and corruption and are facing arrests in the last one month since the new government came to power in the state.

In other Municipalities across the state, numerous council members and officials have resigned en masse over the past few weeks as the state undergoes major changes.

KMC elections are likely to be held in December 2026 as the last civic body’s five-year tenure ends at the end of the year.
