OpenAI to comply with Trump AI model review order: Osborne

OpenAI has confirmed that it will comply with Donald Trump’s executive order asking AI companies to allow the federal government to evaluate the capabilities of their models before they are released to market.
The company’s country president, George Osborne, told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal that the startup will sign up to the voluntary scheme. “It’s quite right that democratic governments play a big role in how this technology is used and deployed,” he said.
Speaking on the sidelines of SXSW in London, Osborne said the company takes its responsibilities “very seriously”, adding: “As a leading laboratory with these very, very powerful and capable AI models, we don’t expect to be asked.”
“We proactively proposed ways for governments to stay on top of safety and security issues, not just in the United States but more broadly.”
orderTrump signed Tuesday requiring access to AI models 30 days before they are released. It requests that companies participate in a benchmarking process to “evaluate the advanced cyber capabilities of AI models and determine the threshold at which an AI model should be designated as a ‘covered frontier model’.”
Osborne, who was Britain’s foreign secretary from 2010 to 2016, said “governments need to be smart” about how they regulate the field.
He added: “Our advice to governments is to create strong regulatory institutions, but be quite flexible about how they operate in the future.”
