FIFA World Cup 2026 weather forecast: FIFA World Cup 2026: Weather forecasters warn fans watching matches at open-air venues in U.S, Canada, Mexico. What to know

Weather forecasters have warned that fans could face health risks due to extreme heat at outdoor arenas during the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A report published last month by the World Weather Quality research group estimates that 26 of the 104 matches at the World Cup are likely to be played in conditions where the Wet Bulb Global Temperature (WBGT) exceeds 26 degrees.

WBGT is a measure of heat stress in the human body that combines temperature, humidity, wind and sunlight.

At the FIFA Club World Cup held in the USA last year, where fans complained about the scorching heat, fans were also banned from bringing water bottles to the fields.

FIFA stated that the “stadium footprint” will include fogging stations, fans, hydration stations and cooling tents. FIFA said bottled water inside the venue will be sold at prices that “will be consistent with other events held at each stadium”.

FIFA said on Friday it would allow fans to bring one “soft, plastic” disposable water bottle into World Cup venues after a ban on refillable bottles sparked outrage. In a video posted on FIFA’s he said.
The announcement, which FIFA called a “clarification” to its water bottle policy, came two days after FIFA said refillable water bottles would not be allowed. This was a change to official stadium codes of conduct that could force thirsty fans to pay for bottled water.

FIFA justified this move on safety grounds “to prevent players and participants from being at risk and from injury”.

“For safety reasons, outside bottles are already banned in many of these venues, and FIFA is implementing this thinking in tournament stadiums,” FIFA told AFP in a statement. he said.

On Friday, FIFA said those concerns remained.

Schirgi stated that “fans will not be allowed to bring hard-sided, reusable water bottles for safety and security reasons” and gave examples of what is and is not allowed.
