‘Why did their conscious wake up only after elections?’: TMC’s Ghosh on dissenters

He also asked: “If the party returns to power, wouldn’t these leaders themselves be at the forefront in terms of ministerial positions, major posts and all the pomp and circumstance? When the party is going through difficult times, how can people who have been in senior administrative and organizational positions for so long suddenly consider switching camps instead of siding with the leader, the workers or the party?”
Ghosh also accused some of them of acting with ulterior motives and said: “Wasn’t the real aim of those who dressed up as revolutionaries to speak openly in the party forum where they got the chance? Or was it more powerful to play the role of ‘good grassroots’ worker with a different agenda in someone else’s scripted drama?”
Highlighting the perceived betrayal, he said: “The MPs and MLAs who became the symbol of the party with Didi’s photo plastered everywhere and for whom Trinamool workers and people voted are now changing camp on their own with a ‘different agenda’, isn’t this a betrayal of trust?”
Warning against attempts to challenge the leadership of the party, Ghosh added: “I have heard some say that they will take the recognition and symbol of the party from Didi. With the support of the opposition, this may be numerically possible, but how can a woman whose life-long struggle has put everyone under numerical pressure after the elections, think of taking the party away from her?”
Reaffirming his loyalty, he said, “The workers who are with Didi and will remain with her, I will also stand with them as a comrade. The party made me an MLA just a month ago. I cannot be a traitor. I will stand with the defeated, I will stand with those caught in intrigues. My conscience tells me now that it is right to stay with Didi. Duty first, resentments second. That is what defines a person.” Ghosh said, “In his greed for glory, fame or kingship, a hero does not deviate from the path of the nobility.” he said.
Fifty-eight legislators of the TMC backed expelled party leader Ritabarta Banerjee and elected her as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, against the official party line.
Amidst speculations about the departure of several leaders, the TMC also announced a leadership change with the appointment of leaders Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen as Joint Secretary at the national level. They will work closely with National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee to assist him in his organizational responsibilities.
