Lancashire village struck by second earthquake in less than a month | UK | News

A village in the United Kingdom has been hit by a second earthquake in less than a month; Residents described a loud noise that sounded like a “distant explosion”.

According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), a 2.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Silverdale, Lancashire, at 9.35pm on Saturday evening.

People as far away as Grange-over-Sands and Bolton-le-Sands reported experiencing a “huge thump” and a “noise explosion” that sounded like a “distant explosion”, while another took to social media to write: “Huge explosion.”

While the same place was shaken by a 2.3 magnitude earthquake on May 13, a smaller earthquake of 0.4 magnitude occurred on April 12.

Since late 2025, several other earthquakes have also affected the region, including two earthquakes in December and another in February and March of this year. reports Lancashire Live.

A resident who experienced the quake wrote on social media last night: “Has there been another earthquake?”

“Additional Information: Earthquake was felt in the Morecambe bay area. Reports described a ‘large explosion’, ‘similar to a distant explosion’ and a ‘noise boom'”.

Responding on social media after the earthquake, local resident James Black said: “A huge explosion,” while Neil Wood wrote: “It was very loud here and the whole tower shook.” Jane Caldwell commented: “That’s what I thought! I thought someone had slammed the door and shook the sofa!!”.

Victoria Kaye Holt said: “My house shook.”

Heather Rowena Brocklebank reported that the earthquake occurred in Arnside, while Judith Whitmarsh confirmed that the earthquake was felt in Grange.
