Starmer condemns ‘sickening’ Belfast stabbing as man seriously injured

A man has been seriously injured in a knife attack in north Belfast.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said officers were called to Kinnaird Avenue at around 10.30pm on Monday and the injured man was taken to hospital.

Police confirmed another person was arrested and detained in connection with the incident.

The scene outside an apartment complex on Kinnaird Avenue in the Lower Antrim Road area was cordoned off on Tuesday morning and signs were visible where the attack took place.

Sir Keir Starmer described the attack as “sickening” and said he would “absolutely not tolerate such disgusting scenes of violence on our streets”.

The Prime Minister added: “My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim and I thank the first responders, including members of the public, who responded.”

North Belfast MP John Finucane said his thoughts were with the victim of the attack.

“I am shocked after the horrific attack in north Belfast last night,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the individual who was hospitalized following serious injuries and I hope they make a full recovery.

“I spoke to police today and would urge anyone with information about this horrific attack to come forward and help the investigation.”

Local DUP councilor Jordan Doran said he was “shocked and deeply concerned” by images circulating online following the stabbing.

“Many residents have contacted me expressing concerns about the safety of the community and seeking reassurance following this incident,” he said.

“These concerns are completely understandable. People deserve to feel safe in their homes and communities, no matter where they live.”

He continued: “What is indisputable is that violence of this nature has no place in North Belfast.

“I will be liaising urgently with the PSNI and relevant agencies to ensure residents receive the information and reassurance they deserve.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam or CCTV footage is asked to contact the police.
