Left winger Nithya Raman edges out Republicans to advance to Los Angeles mayoral runoff

Hello, welcome to the live blog of US politics.

Left-wing candidate Nithya Raman said she was “incredibly honored” and would “fight for a healthier, safer” and “more joyful Los Angeles” as she edged out former reality TV villain Spencer Pratt in the city’s mayoral race.

The progressive L.A. city councilwoman is headed to the Los Angeles mayoral runoff in November, where she will face incumbent Karen Bass.

“I am incredibly honored that voters have given us the opportunity to participate in the general election for Mayor of Los Angeles,” Raman said in a statement published on X.

“Now our fight for a healthier, safer, more affordable and more enjoyable Los Angeles continues,” he added.

HE He held 28.5% of the vote late Monday, trailing Republican Spencer Pratt, who had 25.8%, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar/County Clerk.

Bass, the incumbent seeking another term leading America’s second-largest city, learned on primary night June 2 that he had garnered enough votes to advance to the November election, but the race for second place remained close for nearly a week.

He announced his win in a post on X, saying “LA rejects Spencer Pratt and his MAGA agenda.”

But Bass’ campaign released a statement Monday night after hearing of Raman’s advance. “The campaign against Nithya Raman, who allowed camping near schools and cut the police force, is one Mayor Bass is looking forward to winning,” said strategist Douglas Herman.
