Manchester school stabbing: Knife attack suspect girl detained under Mental Health Act

The young girl, who was arrested after two students and a staff member were injured in a knife attack at the school, was detained in accordance with the Mental Health Law.

The 14-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assault after officers were called to a stabbing at the Co-op Academy in north Manchester on Tuesday morning, according to Greater Manchester Police.

A boy and girl, both 14, and a 27-year-old male staff member were taken to hospital after the incident, and all three were released after evaluation, police said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

Police added that staff at the school, in Plant Hill Road, Blackley, were quick to detain a girl after the incident to ensure there was no further harm to students or staff before officers arrived shortly afterwards.

City of Manchester North Chief Inspector Jon Shilvock said: “Our thoughts are with those injured and caught up in the incident.

“Whilst physical injuries are not believed to be serious, we know the impact on those involved or witnessed the incident will be significant and we want to reassure our community that we are taking this very seriously.

“As our investigation progresses, we are aware that names related to the incident are circulating on social media and are of no use to the investigation.

“This also causes concern for the victims and those affected, so we would like to emphasize that people are not speculating about this incident.

“Officers will remain in and around the area to provide support to ensure staff, students and the wider community feel safe.

“If you have any concerns please speak to our officers who are there to support you.”

It was learned that the school was quarantined after the incident.
