According to Laguna Beach authorities, an aerial search Thursday morning found the body, positively identified as a teenage girl, about a quarter mile north of where the incident occurred. His family was informed.

Laguna Beach Mayor Mark Orgill expressed his deepest condolences to the family. “This is one of the most heartbreaking events I have witnessed in my time serving this community,” he said in a statement.

National Weather Service warned Beachgoers in Orange County are at high risk for rip currents due to fast-moving channels of water that can carry swimmers away from shore. Hazardous conditions are expected to continue through Thursday evening, according to the agency.

Kai Bond, the city’s marine safety chief, addressed beachgoers in a video released Tuesday, urging them to be careful on the beach. Water surges of up to 10 feet have been observed.

“Please know that when you come to the beach, you need to understand your abilities. If you are not an expert, you need to stay out of the water,” Bond said.
