Urgent recall after milk found in dairy-free chocolate bar sold in UK supermarkets
A chocolate bar sold in major supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s has been recalled due to an undeclared allergy risk.
The Food Standards Agency issued a warning on Thursday after Buttermilk Confections recalled its Honeycomb Blast Choc Bar.
The brand, which specializes in plant-based and dairy-free chocolate, issued a warning because the product contained milk that was not stated on the label.
Chocolate bars with batch code BM26105, pack size 45g and best before June 15, 2027 must be returned to the store where purchased for a full refund.
Customers are advised not to eat the product if they are allergic or intolerant to milk or milk ingredients; because the product contains casein, the primary protein found in cow’s milk that can trigger an allergic reaction.
According to Allergy UK, cow’s milk allergies tend to be common among babies and young children, who usually grow and develop by the time they reach school age.
The charity warned that in a small number of people the allergy persists into adulthood and can lead to serious reactions such as anaphylaxis.
Milder or more moderate symptoms may include itching of the mouth, tongue, and throat, swelling of the lips, a red, raised, and itchy rash, vomiting and diarrhea, or even runny nose and sneezing.
These sweet treats retail for £1.60 in Tesco and Sainsbury’s and are often sold in alternative food stores too.
According to Buttermilk Confections’ website, the bar is described as having a “light and crunchy honeycomb coated in creamy, plant-based chocolate.”
It won the bronze medal in the confectionery category at the Free From Food Awards 2022.
