World Cup 2026: Nestory Irankunda – the refugee who quit Bayern to make Australia history

He played 42 games for the championship club, scoring four goals and scoring five goals, which earned him selection for the World Cup.
He has now created history for both his country and his style. In the Group D match against Türkiye, his finish was magnificent, showing the speed and power to create an opening in the 27th minute.
Former Australia and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou told ITV: “It doesn’t matter what level of football you’re playing on the park or in the World Cup, it’s fantastic pace.”
This meant he became the first player born outside Australia to score a World Cup goal for the Socceroos.
He has imitated Michael Jackson in the past when celebrating a goal, even wearing white gloves to score against Curacao in March.
This time he opted to emulate former Australia and Everton midfielder Tim Cahill by throwing a few punches at the corner flag.
“Timmy Cahill is my biggest inspiration in football,” Iranunda said in his statement after the Türkiye win.
“Him and Lionel Messi. Tim Cahill, in my opinion, is the best in Australia. I thought if I scored I would do the same and I should do that.”
Postecoglou believes the goal could have an impact on Iranunda’s future career.
“A huge moment,” Postecoglou added. “Sometimes in World Cups you need a few weeks and your whole world can change. Let’s hope this is a start for him.”
