Eerie amusement park with terrifying three-storey dragon abandoned for 15 years | World | News

Abandoned for 15 years, the spooky amusement park has become a popular destination for urban explorers. Located in Hue, Vietnam, Ho Thuy Tien water park opened around 2004 and was only in operation for a few years.

According to reports, it was forced to close in 2006 due to financial losses and low visitor numbers. New investors attempted to revitalize the area as a working park, but those efforts were ultimately canceled in 2011. Afterwards, it remained a ghost town for years. This formerly unique entertainment complex is famous for its huge three-level metal and concrete dragon, which once housed an aquarium and is located on a pier on Ho Thuy Tien lake, connected to the mainland by three walkways.

Throughout the park’s years of operation, visitors have been able to enjoy a variety of attractions, including a variety of twisting water slides, an outdoor amphitheater for live shows, and a smaller venue for traditional Vietnamese water puppet shows.

However, years of closure caused the park to rust and wear out, leaving a scene like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie.

By 2025, the site returned to municipal control, which sold the assets to pay off accumulated debts.

The Thuan Hoa District Green Park Center was tasked with overseeing a renovation to improve visitors’ experience and opened as a community park that year.

The work included clearing roads, removing debris that had accumulated over the years, and clearing overgrown areas. But some elements remained, including the iconic dragon structure.

A new road has also been laid around the mouth of the lake, making it safer for the many tourists who continue to visit the surreal local landmark.

A TripAdvisor reviewer who visited this year gave the experience a perfect score, writing: “Well landscaped and well-maintained path around the lake.

“The dragon and abandoned slides are covered in graffiti and are great to see and wander around in. If you are in the area we definitely recommend seeing it.”

The former water park is located just south of downtown Hue, the imperial capital of Vietnam.
