World Cup 2026: Thomas Tuchel’s England were fun to watch against Croatia

Whether they will like England defending so poorly against better opposition is another matter.

The thought of world-class forwards facing the kind of sloppy defending we saw in Dallas, especially in the first half, will be a very sobering takeaway for Tuchel, who will realize it’s not good enough.

The selection of Ezri Konsa to replace Manchester City defender Marc Guehi was controversial. This debate will continue as Aston Villa have not made a convincing case for the defender’s continued involvement.

Tuchel could barely hide his displeasure as England twice took the lead through captain Kane, who equaled Gary Lineker’s record of 10 goals for his country at the World Cup; but the poor defending and always dangerous allowed Croatia to get back into the game.

Everything Tuchel said – and it was hardly a pleasant joke – was the catalyst for a remarkable attacking display that allowed Jude Bellingham to regain England’s lead after half-time.

Croatia were then trapped under a wave of attacks, particularly for a while in the middle of the half, where they somehow managed to survive until Marcus Rashford wrapped up the winner late on.

Tuchel’s team selection was a difficult one given the resources at his disposal, but picking Bellingham ahead of Morgan Rogers (by his own admission was the toughest decision) and keeping Bukayo Saka’s fitness by playing Noni Madueke paid off.

Bellingham were England’s powerhouse with their rapid runs from midfield; An example of this was the goal in which he put Mario Pasalic past him before beating Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.

It was the moment when the game turned around as England, late into the second half and clearly supported by a few words from Tuchel, immediately played with more urgency and determination, regaining their advantage and initiative.
