CPI(M) leader and former Higher Education Minister KT Jaleel criticized the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for its contradictory stances on issues including the PM-SHRI scheme.

In a post on Facebook on Saturday (June 20), Mr. Jaleel said the Kerala society will not accept what he called IUML’s “PM-SHRI mohabbat”.

IUML had opposed the PM-SHRI scheme when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) was in power, but is now reviewing the implementation of this scheme after the United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power with IUML Minister N. Shamsudheen holding the General Education portfolio.

The UDF constituted a four-member Cabinet sub-committee, chaired by Mr. Shamsudheen, to examine the implementation of the plan. Chief Minister VD Satheesan said that the State cannot dispense with Central funds and will continue with PM-SHRI.

Mr. Jaleel accused IUML of changing positions depending on whether it is in Opposition or government. He said that the party raised social issues and demands for rights when it was in Opposition, but changed its stance after coming to power.

“The Muslim League is engaged in identity politics while in Opposition, citing religious and communal concerns. It opposes PM-SHRI, claims Munambam is Waqf land and demands additional courses in Malappuram-aided schools. It also opposes practices like lighting of traditional lamp,” he said.

“When it comes to power, the Muslim League takes a different position. PM-SHRI becomes necessary, Munambam is not Wakf land, Malappuram Plus-Two issue needs to be looked into and even lighting of the traditional lamp is accepted,” Mr. Jaleel said.
