The high-risk Perth school zones getting new speed cameras revealed
Extra cameras will be installed on Western Australian roads, with more than 100 “high risk” school zones around metropolitan Perth set to install new speed cameras.
The speed limit in school zones is 40 kilometers per hour and is generally enforced between 7:30 and 9:00 in the morning and 14:30 and 16:00.
Many schools are currently relying on the temporary installation of WA police near their campuses to catch speeding drivers, but Police Minister Reece Whitby announced on Sunday the government would install 20 new cameras in “high risk” school zones.
Renting the cameras cost the government approximately $5 million and will be used on a rotating basis at different schools.
High-risk areas are understood to include schools in areas such as Lake Monger, Banksia Grove, Hale and Maida Vale.
The first camera was installed at Court Grammar School in Perth’s east. Violation notifications will begin to be published on July 27, the first day of the third term.
Court Grammar’s David Gossage said it was installed on Soldiers Road to deter motorists from speeding on the street.
“This situation regarding the drivers constantly worries me and the school principal… [who] “Just don’t respect our school district and don’t put our students at risk in our pick-up and drop-off area,” he said.
Extra cameras similar to Forrest Highways point-to-point system are also planned to be installed along Albany Highway this week.
“If you can’t slow down to 40 kilometers per hour outside school, you’re putting children’s lives at risk, which is why we’re introducing these new cameras,” Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby said.
“Motorists who choose to speed 60 or 70 kilometers per hour through school zones are reckless idiots.
“No parent needs to worry about whether their child is safe when crossing the road or near the road, which is why we’re taking action.”
“It’s an extremely worrying development from the most authoritarian Labor government we’ve ever seen,” he said.
“It’s like something out of Black Mirror.”
