Southwest monsoon covers entire Odisha: IMD

Bhubaneswar: Southwest monsoon covered the entire Odisha on Tuesday, rain affecting many areas, IMD said.

Weather scientist Sanjeev Dwivedi from IMD’s Bhubaneswar center said that the southwest monsoon, which entered Odisha on June 12, covered 30 districts of Odisha on June 23.

He said that with further advancement of monsoon, rainfall activity will continue in different parts of the state.

He said a trough exists from Bihar to the northwestern Bay of Bengal, along Jharkhand, Ganges West Bengal and Odisha, at an average height of 1.5 km above sea level.

Dwivedi said that a storm accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds with a speed of up to 50 km per hour are expected to occur in different districts on Wednesday.


Heavy rains are expected to affect Cuttack, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati and Nayagarh districts on June 24, the official said, adding that a “yellow warning” (be careful) has been issued for these regions.
Similar weather conditions will continue in the state until June 27.

As sea conditions will remain rough to very rough along and off the Odisha coast, the weather bureau has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until June 24.
