‘Silent Walking’ Makes Noise in Wellness Space

In today’s modern world, it is rare to see someone quietly walking around without the distraction of a cell phone, listening to music through headphones, or watching a movie on the go. But a new quiet trend could be a sign of change in the outdoors. Silent March! Yes, you read it right. The silent march entered people’s lives silently. In fact, some call it ‘walking meditation’ and ‘solitary search’.

Continuous Stimulation

Many are putting down their devices, setting boundaries, and taking digital breaks to overcome burnout and screen fatigue. “Many young people are looking for relief from constant digital stimulation and mental overload. Quiet walking offers calmness, reflection and emotional balance,” says Dhara Ghuntla, an independent practicing psychologist and psychotherapist affiliated with Criticare Hospital Sujay Hospital, 7 Hills Hospital.

In a world of constant stimulation, silence becomes a luxury as the brain endlessly jumps from one post, reel or notification to the next. “Continuous exposure to content can cause cognitive overload and reduce opportunities for mental rest. Over time, it affects focus and mental energy,” Ghuntla explains.

Many people are uncomfortable with silence. Many of them cannot live alone in their homes because it brings chaos to them. “Discomfort with silence may indicate that the person is having difficulty coping with their thoughts or feelings,” Dhara adds. Discomfort is an emotion that brings with it anxiety, restlessness, depression, anger and jealousy. People don’t want to step out of their comfort zone. But this also means limiting oneself to other experiences.

So what happens when we stop filling the silence with noise? No music, no phones, no tabs, no reels; just silence and awareness. Silent walking is not just an activity without digital impact. But it also brings with it a degree of mindfulness, emotional regulation, self-awareness, and peace. Quiet walking encourages individuals to focus on the present moment and observe their thoughts without distraction. But with quiet walking, people report thinking more clearly, having a better mood, and feeling lighter mentally.

No Noise, Just Steps

Walking is thought to be a physical benefit. Consultant in Internal Medicine, Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai. “Walking without distraction improves mindfulness, mental clarity, and awareness of the body and environment,” says Manjusha Agarwal.

Unlike intense gym workouts, walking is more sustainable, easy and less intense. Helps reduce stress, blood pressure, heart health and better sleep; This is also good for women with PCOS. “Reducing stress through mindful activities can contribute to better blood pressure control and better heart health, as well as supporting sleep quality,” says Dr Agarwal. Stress is a hidden link between mental and physical health. It benefits people facing burnout, anxiety, work stress, mental fatigue, and FOMO. “I started walking quietly to take a break from the constant music and scrolling. It really helped me think more clearly and feel less overwhelmed,” says intern Jewel D’Souza (22).

Myth Hunter

Most wellness trends demand instant results. It is always better to consult a doctor, nutritionist or fitness trainer before blindly trying something online. “Mindfulness practices don’t have to be complicated. Quiet walking is a simple, evidence-backed habit that complements a healthy lifestyle,” says Dr Agarwal. One myth is that results should be instant, which is not true. It takes at least 15 to 30 days to get in shape or break any bad habits. Consistency and discipline play a big role. Simple habits work best. “For me, quiet walks are the only time in the day that feels like I belong; no noise, no distractions, just a chance to slow down and reset,” says Christina Fernandes, a homemaker and mother of one.

In a culture obsessed with constant noise, silence may be the most powerful wellness tool we ignore. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to walk without noise.
