The bedtime ritual will make a huge difference to Brits across the country – and it’ll only take 30 seconds to adjust. Heatwave or otherwise, the public needs to be mindful of how refreshing a late-night shower can be. Not only will you feel clean before bed, but taking a warm shower has few health benefits.
Experts have since outlined why a nightly shower can help you sleep better. Not only will a warm or “moderately cool” shower help you fall asleep sooner, Wholesale Domestic experts have outlined the effect it can have on you, too. It can be a particularly useful nightly ritual in hot weather and only takes 30 seconds.
Brian Toward, CEO of Wholesale Domestic, explains: “While it may seem logical to take a cold shower during a heatwave, this is not always the most effective way to cool your body. When you are exposed to very cold water, your blood vessels constrict through a process known as vasoconstriction. This reduces blood flow to the skin, where your body naturally releases heat.”
“In some cases, an extremely cold shower can trick the body into thinking it has become too cold, causing the body to work harder to retain heat and maintain core temperature. As a result, you may feel refreshed initially, but your body may then become less efficient at dissipating heat, leaving you feeling hotter for longer.
“A lukewarm or slightly cold shower is a better option. It helps you gradually lower your body temperature without confusing your body with retaining heat. The same principle applies to baths, where a warm soak will be much more effective than a cold one.”
Expert friends GoodHouseKeeping Remember that these warm showers should be limited to 30 seconds only. The time limit is in line with the gradual temperature drop that Brian noted.
They wrote: “Emily also recommends finishing your shower with cool, but not cold, water for about 30 seconds. This slight temperature drop will help start your body’s natural cooling process more quickly, so your temperature should be more even when you hit the hay.”
Sleep expert Sammy Margo notes: “Showering before bed can help you fall asleep more easily, especially in hot weather. It works by cooling your body, helping you lower your core temperature when you step out of the shower, which is an important step in triggering the body’s natural sleep mechanisms. Showering can also become part of a calming bedtime routine and help signal your brain that it’s time to rest and prepare for sleep.”
